Foster families: first-aid and CPR standards

Becoming a foster family in Kentucky means providing a safe, temporary home to a child in the care of the Cabinet. Among the training required before and after approval: first-aid instruction, with current CPR and first-aid certification required for those caring for children with medical complexity. It is one requirement alongside the home evaluation.

The first-aid requirement

Under 922 KAR 1:495, foster and adoptive parent applicants must complete first-aid training as part of pre-service and ongoing training, and documentation of current first-aid certification may satisfy that requirement. Foster parents caring for children with medical complexity must hold current certification in infant, child and adult CPR and first aid.

The requirement is administered by the Kentucky Cabinet for Health and Family Services, and certification must be kept current. This training is in addition to the home evaluation, background checks and parenting suitability the Cabinet assesses — holding a certificate does not by itself qualify a person to foster.

How to meet it

A recognized, up-to-date first-aid and CPR certificate meets this requirement. It is in addition to the required training or assessment, and is renewed periodically.
